This resource updates previous Hemingway bibliographies and supplements Audre Hanneman's seminal compilation Ernest Hemingway: A Comprehensive Bibliography (CH, Jul'68). Grissom (an independent scholar) spent 12 years consulting numerous library and private collections to ensure comprehensiveness. The printed bibliography (vol. 1) consists of sections A through C and seven appendixes. Section A contains classical bibliographical descriptions for all of Hemingway's published writings, including classification of every edition, printing, issue, and state for each separate publication. "Multivolume Collections" forms section AA, while B and C are dedicated to Hemingway's first appearances in books and periodicals. Appendixes feature chronologies of Hemingway's life and signature changes, a glossary of bibliographic terms, references and works cited, and a list of library collections containing manuscripts. Volume 2, published in DVD format, itemizes thousands of additional items, such as interviews, adaptations, ephemera, anthology appearances, and 1,035 translations. While the print volume reproduces images in gray scale, the DVD provides full-color scans, including 1,650 images related to section A. The few editorial slips that this reviewer noticed were inconsequential and may be forgiven in a work of this depth and size. While admittedly weak on secondary sources, this work will be an important reference tool for Hemingway scholars and collectors. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above. R.
