Forty-eight paintings by Manet, Monet, Degas, C[xa]*e[aa]zanne, Renoir, Seurat, Gauguin, and their compatriots a proud part of the core collection of London's Courtauld Institute of Art are on their first tour of the U.S. This handsomely produced catalog presents all in color, with many color details mounted full-page or larger and several analytic raking-light photos and X-radiographs completing the illustrations. Annotations are exceptionally full, including provenance and exhibition histories, critical bibliographies, and lists of technical details (e.g., kind of canvas, kind of ground applied, etc.) besides literate historical-critical notes. Introductory essays discuss Samuel Courtauld, founder of the institute; survey various critical meanings of impressionism and post-impressionism; and trace the discoveries made by technological examination of the paintings. Especially in paperback, this is an exceptional value for any art library, even though the printing fails to do justice to the paintings' vibrant colors. The exhibition, now in New York, will travel to Fort Worth, Chicago, and Kansas City. Index of artists.
