本书是作者跨越九省寻觅的农业合作化运动众多亲历者的口述回顾. 新中国建立伊始, 一穷二白, 百废待兴, 面临帝国主义全面经济封锁和军事挑衅, 以毛泽东为首的党中央一面号召抗美援朝, 保卫国家, 一面推进土地改革, 引导广大获地农民组织互助组, 走向农业合作化. 中国农村自下而上开展了大规模的农业合作化运动, 由此带动了全国手工业和工商业的"公私合营", 几千年的私有制在新中国由此改变为公有制和集体所有制, 新中国独立自主的国民经济体系得以建立. 本书作者马社香, 武汉市社会科学院历史文化研究所研究员, 曾出版"前奏--毛泽东1965年重上井冈山"等口述史.
