Kazazian (Johns Hopkins Univ. School of Medicine) has written a fascinating book that is part monograph and part memoir on the topic of mobile DNA. The book is all the more interesting and important because the author is one of the seminal figures in the field. Kazazian begins the work with a detailed overview of the topic of mobile elements in DNA molecules. He then takes a largely chronological journey through the major research on mobile DNA, performed mostly in his lab or those of his colleagues. Kazazian is an excellent writer, and writes in such a familiar style that reading the entire book is like sitting down for a chat with a colleague. Furthermore, his book illustrates the workings of a scientific mind, as Kazazian reveals all of the inevitable successes, detours, and even failures that occur in scientific research. However, as informative as the book is, it will be rough going for those who are not already familiar with the topic. Aids to the reader include exhaustive references as well as a glossary and a complete index. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Graduate students and above. R. K. Harris William Carey University
