The vast majority of Denmark's Jews were saved from the Holocaust in 1943 when local residents, tipped off in advance about a coming roundup of Jews, helped them flee to Sweden. This is one of the few bright spots in the whole history of the Holocaust, and has already been the subject of Leni Yahil's excellent The Rescue of Danish Jewry (1969). Goldberger's volume of 13 essays, part of a tribute to the Danes, does not supersede Yahil. It does, however, make available in English a notable Danish account of this episode by Jo/rgen Haestrup, several fascinating personal narratives, and a series of articles, including one by the noted religious historian Jaroslav Pelikan, that seek to understand why the Danes displayed ``moral courage under stress.'' Excellent photographs and material not available elsewhere in English make this a valuable collection for any student of the subject.-J.D.
