Here is a book for the regional (Maryland) and topical (Amerindian ethnobotany) specialist. Although listed as Volume 3 in a series on bioactive plants, the book stands on its own. In Medicinal Plants of the Bible (CH, May '84), and Culinary Herbs (1985) Duke dealt with this subject. This volume deals with the 25 percent of Maryland flora traditionally used in folk medicine. About 700 medicinal plants are alphabetically listed by scientific name and most are illustrated (p. 1171). References used in abbreviated form are listed (p. 172174), and each item is then cross-listed by common names (p. 175180). Finally a list of ailments is matched with the scientific name of the plant (p. 181212). Useful for specialists at advanced undergraduate and graduate levels.-B.M. du Toit, University of Florida
