An account of Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon and of its insalubrious consequences. Yaniv, an Israeli political scientist, identifies the strategic factors and political actors involved in the decision to enter the Lebanese quagmire. Yaniv carefully relates the complex interaction between Israel's strategic imperatives and domestic politics by drawing on extensive research and firsthand knowledge of his country's politics and military affairs. He assesses the respective roles played by rival Israeli leaders, and by Syria, Egypt, the Palestine Liberation Organization, the Moronites, the Shiites, and the US. The result is an unusually detailed and sober analysis of both Israel's failures in Lebanon and its larger security dilemma. Although the author questions the assumptions behind Israel's commitment to preemptive attacks, he concludes that in the future Israelis will continue to respond preemptively in view of their insecure environment. Of several studies on the subject, Yaniv's book is the most comprehensive and up-to-date, since it treats the withdrawal phase and its consequences. Good maps; copious documentation; good bibliography and index. Upper-division and graduate students.-R.H. Dekmejian, University of Southern California

Yaniv, an Israeli political scientist, has written an extensive account of the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon and its aftermath. In no other conflict, Yaniv points out, was there such a clamor for peace by the war-weary Israeli people, who were further frustrated by the highly publicized Sabra and Shatila massacres in Israeli-controlled areas. Yaniv states that the problem that impelled Israel to invade Lebanon has not been resolved and that sooner or later the same old choices must be faced: to yield, to act defensively, to launch limited reprisals, or ``to act in a preventive and anticipatory manner.'' An excellent firsthand investigation of a dilemma that probably will last as long as there is an Israel. Bibliography; to be indexed. A comprehensive and sober analysis of the 1982 Israeli incursion into Lebanon. Yaniv, an Israeli expert on national security affairs, lucidly recounts the Israeli military action against PLO and Syrian forces in Lebanon from 1982 to 1984. Focusing upon Israeli political and military leaders involved in decision-making, Yaniv finds considerable fault with Israeli Prime Minister Begin and Major-General Sharon. He also covers the intricate web of relations among political factions in both Israel and Lebanon. The perfect companion to Ze'ev Schiff and Ehud Ya'ari's Israel's Lebanon War ( LJ 10/15/84), Yaniv's book is essential reading for any analyst of this period. One of the best on the subject.
