505 0 |a Behind the brick pits of Yancey County Waterworks -- Far down in the parched pits of summertime -- The snake spells plagued him -- On the spine of the ridge -- I see he's a special child, Miss -- She asked to speak to the child alone -- Grown little, nine-years-old, Bledsoe upset -- In those slow autumns -- Harvest paradox, autumn's pilfer -- Pulp of dying mountain town -- Let him be shut of us, Lord -- He walked lonesome -- His father who brought him melon candy -- Unlike his father -- In years he mended -- Carry me to the doctor, Boy -- He chose silence in that simple light -- Heart-pound, blood-rush -- What they told me is I don't have long -- In middle age, in those first leaf-strains -- Dear God of the dead-haunted heart -- Nights he moseyed through the house -- No sheets -- Found his father's rum jug -- Once, when he woke before dawn -- Death of an orchard -- Spring came, winged seeds lifted to sun -- To wash her. Up in the dank room, her body sketched in heat -- She slept in fits and fever -- Then the world to black -- Time to leave you, Boy -- In the keening house, in the night's arc -- Went -- Dusk comes, heat stays, still -- A blackness amplified, greenness insinuated -- Something deep in Durant's vitals -- They find him near noon.
