Conservateur au Musée national d'Art moderne, l'auteur du présent ouvrage met en lumière le travail des photographes ayant enregistré les grandes tragédies du XXe siècle, et celui des contemporains qui, inquiets de cette Apocalypse toujours menaçante, imaginent un espace urbain où il ne subsisterait que des monuments vides. Ici donc, de Dresde en 1945 à Detroit en 2008 en passant par Beyrouth dans les années 1980-1990, des dizaines de prises de vue, fruits du travail de correspopndants de guerre comme d'artistes contemporains.
