The author of previous books on Joyce--States of Desire: Wilde, Yeats, Joyce, and the Irish Experiment (CH, Sep'99, 37-0165), Reauthorizing Joyce (CH, Apr'89, 26-4336)--Mahaffey (English and gender and women's studies, Univ. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) has collected 15 essays, one for each story in Dubliners. They are written by pairs of Joyce experts, including Derek Attridge and Anne Fogarty; Michael Patrick Gillespie and David Weir; and Margot Norris and Vincent Pecora. Joyce scholars will find this volume interesting because of its keen analysis, and the book's focus on communication and interaction makes it a useful starting point for less experienced readers. In addition, most essays are written in an accessible style, and many provide background and definitions that will help students enter into Joyce studies. Each chapter begins with a precis (these range from three sentence to two full paragraphs) that describes the collaborative process. Many of these reflections are engaging and fun to read, and they also provide undergraduate students with a window into academic collaboration. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
