A detailed and comprehensive study of the problems of unaccompanied children in emergencies written from a historical, psychological, and legal perspective. The focus is on the care and placement of unaccompanied children in natural disasters, war, and refugee situations, from the Spanish Civil War to the present. In addition to conducting library searches, the authors interviewed policymakers, program personnel, and social workers who were major participants in past relief efforts. The text contains valuable definitions, statistics, and examples within a carefully organized sequence of chapters that lead to a concluding section on policy recommendations. The book was written primarily for people directly involved with children in caretaker roles. It is a major contribution to the field of child welfare, and is highly recommended for academic libraries, community college level up.-M.J. O'Neil, East Carolina University
