``Intended for those doing research on Chinese artists, collectors, and connoisseurs, and who are not able to speak or read Chinese,'' this work contains over 5000 names of Chinese artists from the T'ang Dynasty to the present. Very brief biographical information is included for each name, as are references to further information in other English-language sources. What is unique is an instructional section showing how to read Chinese characters by a modified stroke count system. After identifying the characters, users can turn to another section in which characters are arranged by stroke count. Other indexes are arranged by artists' alternate names and by Romanized characters. Helpful for students and collectors, but the brief information limits its usefulness as a general dictionary.
