This is the English translation of La route antique des hommes pervers (Paris, 1985). It embodies Girard's extension to the Book of Job of his theories about violence and the origins of communal unity see Violence and the Sacred, (CH, Jul '78); Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World, 1987, and The Scapegoat, (CH, Jan '87). Girard has become an important and controversial figure and it is useful to have this and the other volumes available in translation. Academic libraries should acquire the other volumes first and then add this one, which by itself is relatively slight and needs to be placed in perspective. Libraries acquiring Girard should also acquire To Honor Rene Girard (1986). There is a good survey of Girard's exegetical views in R. North, ``Violence and the Bible: The Girard Connection,'' Catholic Biblical Quarterly 47 (1985): 1-27. For advanced students.-N.A. Greenberg, Oberlin College
