Kessler, a reactor physics and safety specialist based in Germany, thoroughly covers the subject of nuclear fission energy, including up-to-date developments worldwide, the fuel supply chain, the physics of different types of reactors, and a detailed discussion on safety with a major focus on light water reactors. The 12-chapter volume as a whole is well organized, and although the language is a bit curious, readers can easily follow the logic provided they have a priori basic knowledge in nuclear engineering. Though most of the science presented is classic, the author keeps track of international state-of-the-art scientific and technical advancements by citing recent scientific articles and reports. The extensive, yet proper, use of schematics and graphs further helps readers grasp concepts and understand trends. This comprehensive book, part of Springer's "Power Systems" series, is useful to advanced students, researchers, and professionals in nuclear energy. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. M. Alam University of California, Berkeley
