This broad collection of review articles, written by various authors mostly affiliated with German universities and lab centers, treats the application of bio-microsystems to many areas of biomedical technology. Although each article is written by a different author, careful editing has produced a uniform approach and level of presentation. The emphasis is on applications, rather than physical principles, of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), and familiarity with MEMS principles and basic manufacturing methods is mostly assumed. Topics range from implant devices, analytical micro-biosensors and systems, to DNA-based microsystems, protein arrays, cell-based systems, and microfluidic platforms for separation/detection on a chip. The last chapter extends these ideas to the exciting topic of bio-nanotechnology for the study of intracellular and metabolic-level mechanisms and phenomena. Each chapter has an extensive and updated bibliography. The volume is directed to researchers in bioMEMS who may be interested in getting a broad overview of the whole field. One can get a wealth of ideas for extensions and future research projects and applications by examining this collection of reviews. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. Professionals. J.
