A bibliography of 700 citations to journal articles, monographs, and collected essays that emphasizes practical aspects of ethnographic fieldwork. Since participant observation is the primary means of data-gathering in cultural anthropology, it is the principal focus of this bibliography. Citations to specific techniques of partcipant observation--interviews, observation, surveys, photography--are included, as are selected references to theoretical issues related to fieldwork, primarily ethical ones. The numbered entries are listed in alphabetical order by author and are accompanied by informative abstracts of about 100 words. There are geographical and subject indexes. The two-page subject index is restricted to a mere 25 general terms, and there are no subdivisions. As a result, there are unwieldy numbers of citations for about one third of the index terms (e.g., 189 entries under "participant observation," 140 under "field problems," 106 under "ethics"). Despite that inadequacy, this unique bibliography will be useful to anthropologists preparing for fieldwork and to others investigating ethical or other theoretical concerns associated with ethnographic fieldwork. Recommended for libraries with substantial anthropology collections. -C. J. Busick, University of Colorado
