Plante (psychology and director of the Spirituality and Health Institute, Santa Clara Univ.) has compiled a collection that focuses on integration of spiritual and religious behavior and psychology and culminates in a look at various facets of positive psychology. In the tradition of humanistic and transpersonal theorists, the scholar-contributors examine the positive influence spiritual and religious practices may have on psychological health and society at large. But they go a step further, examining evidence-based research to show "the fruit of the spirit." Both Eastern and Western traditions are incorporated, using a broad range of spiritual techniques and methods. Though more empirical tools are being created in this relatively new field of positive psychology, much more research will need to be done. A companion to Contemplative Practices in Action: Spirituality, Meditation, and Health, also edited by Plante (CH, Jan'11, 48-2619), and Spirit, Science, and Health: How the Spiritual Mind Fuels Physical Wellness, coedited by Plante and Carl Thoresen (CH, Dec'07, 45-2070), this volume will be most valuable to those engaged in or training for therapy and counseling. Each contribution includes notes. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students, researchers, professionals. J. Bailey Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute
