In recent years, grassroots organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) have focused public attention on the problem of alcohol-related traffic accidents. This multi-author, interdisciplinary, and cross-national survey demonstrates that objective data on drunk driving are elusive, since the variables are so hard to control. Nevertheless, the sociological, psychological, legal, economic, and technological information marshaled in this volume should be of interest to policy planners and the public. For example, the Scandinavian experience suggests that increased risk of detection, not increased penalties, is a more effective deterrent. This scholarly treatment is recommended for large public and academic libraries. Jack Ray, Loyola/Notre Dame Lib., Baltimore (c) Copyright 2010.
