The link between poverty and environmental degradation is often discussed, but the issue is rarely addressed from the perspective of poor people. Most of these discussions center on the development of policies which improve diversity, making the specific assumption that these improvements will directly or indirectly reduce poverty. Here, various contributors provide dialogue on aspects of conservation related to the value of diversity to the poor in the context of different ecological conditions. The contributors attempt to answer questions related to the effects of conservation on poverty, the value of diversity to the poor (from the standpoint of the poor), and how the scale of environmental issues affects the poverty-diversity issue. The writing tends to be technical at times, requiring readers to have some basic understanding of the relevant issues. Thus, the book is most suited for those individuals with a background and interest in this topic. It would be an excellent source of information for policy makers, researchers, and students in various environmental disciplines. Summing Up: Recommended.
