The seven analytic essays collected here focus on the social organization, function, and structure of a Mexican border city, Ciudad Ju;arez. Their unifying theme is the social and economic consequences of the relationship between a city of a Third World nation, Mexico, and the US. For those who are not specialists on this subject, these essays serve as a very good introduction to a number of central issues involved in such a relationship. Readers learn about its history, development, and consequences in a manner that is informative, well documented, and carefully presented. The authors employ social ecology as a common theoretical framework that helps link these essays together. Neither the theoretical framework nor the analysis in these essays is very complex, making the information useful to nonspecialists. A readable contribution to understanding the issues confronting a developing nation and the social system of a border city. General and undergraduate readership.-J.R.
