Part of a series intended to introduce potential students and /or general readers to one of 18 disciplines--philosophy, linguistics, social work, nursing, or medicine. Most career counselors would agree that any book aspiring to "invite" its readers to embark upon a career in medicine should probably deal with medicine as a social service, a scientific enterprise, and a business. Some medical professionals (perhaps most) would also argue that a work of this kind should also include some medical history, philosophy, and ethics. In general, this particular book is insensitive to the polemics of medicine--especially the often conflicting social, political, and scientific roles of the physician. Indeed, as the author admits: "My bias is that of a general physician, which may have made me give too much stress to the organic aspects of disease. . . ." He is right! This book has way too much biology and science and not enough about the actual career in medicine. R. F. White College of Mount St. Joseph on the Ohio
