In this second edition (CH, Mar'78), Idhe (Stony Brook Univ., SUNY) offers two additional sections, comprising five new chapters, that incorporate later developments of Idhe's thought dealing with pragmatism and phenomenology, material culture, and new technologies. In a new preface Idhe reflects on the bulk of his work, identifying its impact on other disciplines. This helps strengthen the new chapters, which elaborate the contact between phenomenology and technologies of film, simulation, video games, science imaging, and bows. The additional chapters use many concrete examples and explore the ways in which experimental phenomenology can teach readers about their experiences of the world. Now called postphenomenology, the experimental approach reveals the multistabilities and non-foundationality that challenge classical phenomenology and its adherence to notions of essence. It can serve as a very clear way into phenomenology for those in other fields, and also as a move toward broadening the applications of phenomenological theory. The book has a weak index and a one-half-page bibliography. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-level undergraduates and above. J. Donohoe University of West Georgia
