Webster (emer., animal husbandry, Univ. of Bristol, UK; formerly, Panel on Animal Health and Welfare Panel, European Food Safety Authority) has drawn from his considerable experience and knowledge of animal welfare to present a thought-provoking discussion of future challenges in meeting animal welfare needs. He presents and expands on his term "planet husbandry," which combines the principles of animal husbandry and sustainable agriculture to maintain food safety, efficiency, humanity, and stewardship. Webster asserts that animal production can be sustained through adoption of a holistic approach that encompasses stewardship of the land and meeting the welfare needs of animals. Further, he believes that problems associated with animal production should be addressed by consumers and policy makers, and not entirely by livestock farmers. This book will be worthwhile to a general readership and students, but will likely be of greatest importance to those directly involved in the animal production industries. Summing Up: Recommended. All students in animal husbandry programs, professionals/practitioners, and general readers. G. E. Aiken independent scholar
