In The AMS Weather Book, Williams (public outreach coordinator, American Meteorological Society) provides a clearly written, profusely illustrated narrative guide to weather that affects the US. It is suitable for introducing beginning students and general readers to weather events and phenomena and their causes: nearly every page contains photographs, charts, maps, and/or color drawings illustrating the weather topics described. Topics in this 12-chapter volume range from how rainbows are formed and what makes the wind blow, to climate change and how weather satellites work. In addition, Williams highlights profiles of meteorologists and other scientists influential in weather prediction and research, including many women and minorities. This work, with its attractive, easy-to-understand graphics, offers a useful, engaging basic introduction to a wide variety of weather-related topics. Includes a glossary of relevant terms. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels of undergraduate students and general readers. A. C. Prendergast University of South Alabama
