Robert Koch, discoverer of the bacterial cause of tuberculosis and cholera, and pioneer of many fundamental bacteriological techniques, is, obviously, one of the great names of 19th-century science. Yet, amazingly, there has been no biography of him available in English. Brock, a bacteriologist, has rectified this situation with this easily readable account of the life and work of Koch, in which the chapters dealing with the technical aspects of his work are especially strong. The book is also enlivened by some excellent photographs, and somewhat spoiled by the overuse of quotations, most from letters of Koch that were previously published only in some out-of-print German sources.
