South Georgia is an island southeast of the Falkland Islands and a popular cruise destination for Antarctic tourists. Burton and Croxall are both experienced naturalists with extensive experience on the main and nearby outlying islands. This guide, designed for tourists, is the only one of its kind. Brief introductions on geology, topography, climate, history, and conservation efforts lay the groundwork for an impressive photographic guide. The book covers 65 bird species, 20 sea mammal species, 60 insect species, and more than 40 plant species. Discussions of distribution, identification, and behavior are standard for most entries; species accounts also frequently include information on conservation status and threats, as well as a "Where to See" section. An index of scientific and common names aids in locating appropriate species profiles. Given its limited target audience, this will be a discretionary purchase for all libraries. All proceeds go to support the conservation activities of the South Georgia Heritage Trust. Summing Up: Recommended. Only comprehensive collections serving general readers. J.
