Summary: | This volume celebrates the first solo exhibition in Canada of Brooklyn-based artist Eve Sussman and her collaborative team Rufus Corporation. Together they produce interrelated films and videos, photographs and installations developed on numerous journeys through Russia and Central Asia. The focus here is the film installation whiteonwhite, which draws on the radial abstractions and reflections on transcendence of Kasimir Malevich, and the fate of Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin, seen through the lens of science fiction and film noir. Generated by algorithm, edited in real time and heavily informed by such twentieth-century filmmakers as Jean-Luc Godard and Wim Wenders, the work is a fascinating investigation into space and time, utopia and dystopia, fractured narration and landscapes marked by economic and ecological upheaval. |
