A straightforward, well-written, and extremely thoughtful analysis. Friedman, a respected authority on naval matters, not only addresses the contemporary US doctrine termed "The Maritime Strategy," but effectively places it into historical and conceptual context. The opening chapters on strategy, national strategy, and sea power are some of the clearest and most cogent expositions of those subjects to be found in the literature. The remainder of the book, focusing more specifically on the content and implications of the Maritime Strategy, are equally persuasive. There is nothing available that provides such a comprehensive summary of the subject (the closest comparison is the now dated: Paul H. Nitze et al., Securing the Seas: The Soviet Naval Challenge and Western Alliance Options, 1979). If only one book on this subject is to be acquired, this is it. Careful notes. Recommended for all audiences. -B. T. Trout, University of New Hampshire
