A brief overview of the role women have played in the development of the science and profession of medicine in the Western world. Women have served as healers, midwives, doctors, and nurses and have suffered periods of persecution and ostracism throughout the history of medicine. The author devotes a chapter to each major historical period and intersperses contemporary writings and illustrations as she traces women's struggle for recognition and respect. Bourdillon's study concludes with a look at women in medicine today. Intended for use in schools, the author has included activities designed to further the reader's knowledge. Although written for students, the book also has appeal to an older audience. Glossary; no index. --Jane Larkin
