Bibliography and index of English verse printed 1476-1558 /

This volume is a companion to Carleton F. Brown and Rossell H. Robbins's Index of Middle English Verse (1943) and Robbins and John L. Cutler's Supplement to the Index of Middle English Verse (1965). It supplements these predecessors for the period 1476-1500, finding additional citations for printed Middle English poetry of that period, and then extends its predecessors by doing for the Tudor period (1500-1558) what they had done for the medieval period. The Tudor index constitutes most of the volume. Two significant additions are the bibliographies of the books containing printed English verse 1476-1500, and the much more extensive bibliography for the period 1500-1558. These are keyed to Short Title Catalogue numbers. This volume was done to exacting scholarly standards worthy of its predecessors, and despite its hefty price, it is a must for libraries that support the study of medieval and Renaissance English literature. -W.
