Carroll offers an easy-to-read introduction to the rapidly evolving discipline of cell biology. In this short, concise volume he presents an academic overview of subcellular organelles at the molecular level. It serves as a good guide to a complex subject, for topics are dealt with in a clear, logical progression, which reinforces the learning experience. The author uses historical introductions to give the material a timely perspective and defines many scientific terms in the margins for quick referral. Extensive use of diagrams, tables, and electron micrographs helps to clarify important points. Recommended for undergraduate libraries, lower division and up, or for anyone requiring a brief review of the material. The paperback edition is an economical buy for an introductory cell biology course, however, more detailed discussions and bibliographies would be needed for upper-division courses. J. R.
