The specialized focus of this volume--implementing equal employment policies in Britain--will limit its usefulness. It offers, however, several well-written essays on evaluating the need for an active strategy to create opportunities for women, i.e., what is called a positive action programme or project in Britain and affirmative action in the US. These essays deal with women in several different occupations--teaching, management, academia, finance, television, social work, and local government--and offer generally similar perspectives on each of them, with some useful comparative statistics. A few chapters explicitly draw comparisons with the US, and most suggest some parallels. Most useful for libraries serving public policy or management programs, especially those with an international/comparative policy studies emphasis. -M. M. Ferree, University of Connecticut
