Editor Schreiber, a distinguished geologist, has put together an outstanding collection of papers that present evaporites within the context of their origin, chemistry, depositional setting, and diagenesis, with particular emphasis on hydrocarbon accumulation. Topics include evaporite basin stratigraphy, Peritidal evaporites, evaporites and Siliciclastics, subaqueous evaporites, relation to petroleum source, stable isotope geochemistry, salt structures, and well logging and seismic measurements. Most of the important ideas in evaporites are discussed and are well illustrated. A must for anyone interested in evaporitic rocks, and particularly those involved in petroleum exploration and production in rocks with evaporites. Level: upper-division undergraduate and graduate. -R.C. Murray, University of Montana
