The three authors--all associated with the Alternative Defense Project--analyze six alternative approaches to global security. In addition, they assess issues common to the approaches (verification and economic conversion). Roger Fisher adds a chapter on the role of international law, and the conclusion addresses the prospects for such a transformation's occurring in national security policies. The volume surveys the concepts of "minimum deterrence," "qualitative disarmament," civilian-based defenses, and the strategic defense option in lay language without the usual heavy jargon of the field. It weighs the strengths and weaknesses of each approach and proposes an integrated approach to create a hybrid common security system. This book belongs in all college and university collections in international affairs and peace studies for it outlines clearly the options open to the nations and their leaders who want to move away from the dangers of an arms-saturated world. Comparable to S. Brown's The Causes and Prevention of War (CH, Jul '87). Extensive bibliography; useful appendix on current proposals for arms reduction. Appropriate for undergraduates and general readers. J. A. Rhodes Luther College
