The literature covering the period of the Holocaust is by now one of the largest segments in the field of modern Jewish history, and for good reason. The incredible tragedy that befell the Jewish people in Europe for a span of 12 years is unparalleled. Those who survived the horrors of the Holocaust have a strong urge to explain what happened and, through their writings, to preserve some of the history and culture that had been wiped out. This book is by one of a handful of Jews who survived the Nazi occupation of Lithuania. Mishell tells the story of himself, his family, and that of his people as the Nazi noose around their town tightened. He then describes the ghetto of Kovno and the horrors that befell his own family and those around them. Throughout, the story is told in a simple, straightforward language that makes the account all the more gripping. It is an important story by a witness, especially important in light of the attempts over the past 20 years to deny the Holocaust had ever taken place. General readership.
