This title is a fine start for a series published under the auspices of the World Federation for Culture Collections. The chapters cover all of the basics of microorganism handling, including resource centers, information resources, administration and safety, culture and preservation, identification, patents for biotechnological innovations, culture collection services, and organization of resource centers. From this list, one may realize that some chapters could have been combined with others for a more compact result, but that is the price paid for separate authorship for each chapter. However, the editor compensates for this problem by providing excellent referrals throughout the text. A complete index helps as well. The in-depth discussion of the existence and workings of culture collections makes this book unique and invaluable, and one can recommend it for any biology collection. The series should be watched carefully, however--ensuing volumes could repeat much of the useful information printed here. -N. J. Bird, Harvard University
