An expertly written, critical review of the state of classical macroeconomic theory through the mid-1980s. The volume is well researched and documented, tightly argued, and soundly grounded in the fundamentals of contemporary thought. The intellectual turf claimed by modern-day classicists is skillfully carved out of the terrain of macroeconomic theory, and their stance on empirical issues is plainly stated. Despite disclaimers on the jacket, however, this is a highly technical piece of work. Sophisticated mathematics does not appear, to be sure, but there are enough equations to scare off the casual reader. More importantly, the issues raised have significance only for those with previous exposure to the current debate among all species of macrotheorists. Hoover's work is thus appropriate only for libraries serving either research organizations or colleges and universities with strong graduate and perhaps undergraduate programs of teaching and research. -G.
