Hyman begins his text with a historical review of the organization of information before and during the nineteenth century. He thus provides a foundation for what follows, giving the reader insight into the evolution of many modern library practices. Thereafter, the book turns practical. Two chapters deal with printed access via descriptive cataloging and subject headings. Two more look at automated catalogs and automated analytic means of access in detail. The final chapter surveys the current status of the librarian and how information is organized, with comments on standardization, bibliographic utilities, etc. Selected bibliography; index. --Patrick Dewey
