Frier, the eminent author of two major studies of Roman law in Roman society, Landlords and Tenants in Imperial Rome (1980) and The Rise of the Roman Jurists (1985), offers a first-rate textbook for teaching Roman law, specifically delictual law. Its approach, as its title suggests, is case study; it is well equiped with glossaries, brief biographies of important Roman jurists, up-to-date bibliographies, and an index locorum. And because all Latin citations are translated, it is accessible to every reader. Furthermore, a very useful set of classroom notes may be obtained from the author. It must be stressed, however, that Frier's book is a classroom resource; it complements but does not replace the instructor. Consequently, the independent reader seeking a thorough introduction to Roman delictual law will need to look elsewhere, e.g., B. Nicholas, An Introduction to Roman Law (1962). W. J.
