Als ersten Schritt einer längst überfälligen Aufarbeitung dieser höchst bedeutenden, aber bislang fast ausschließlich in begrenzten Teilaspekten thematisierten Richtung der österreichischen Kunst um 1900 will die Schau einen Überblick über Entwicklung und Positionen der symbolistischen Kunstauffassung in Österreich und Mitteleuropa bieten. Der Symbolismus bildet sich bereits in den 1870er Jahren aus dem Geist der Décadence heraus, die für sich die abgründige Ästhetik des Verfalls, des Mystischen und Rätselhaften entdeckt. Anstelle der historistischen Repräsentationsmalerei tritt der subjektive Blick auf seelische Vorgänge in den Mittelpunkt, was sich in einer suggestiven Farb- und Formensprache äußert.--Publisher description. | ||
