Based on a lecture/discussion series in the Department of Physiology, Oxford University, this exciting collection of 32 articles is one of the best modern approaches to some of the oldest philosophical questions surrounding the ``mind-brain'' problem. The diversity and quality of the contributors is the strength of the book but, to a certain extent, these factors contribute to the the book's weakness, since there is a minimal effort by some essayists to discuss issues raised by others. Nevertheless, it is an intellectual feast provided by such individuals as Donald MacKay, Hans Eysenck, John Searle, Sir John Eccles, Larry Weiskrantz, Rodolfo Llinas, Horace Barlow, and Jeffrey Gray. Major topics include consideration of mind in humans and in animals, artificial intelligence and related ideas of artificial consciousness, and metatheoretical observations on the modern world of philosophy and of brain science. Mindwaves is well referenced and indexed. Recommended for advanced students.-D.P. Kimble, University of Oregon
