This thirteenth "Scholar's Guide to Washington D.C." differs most significantly from previous titles in providing extensive coverage of resources in the fine arts. As the foreword notes, the artistic worlds of France, Italy, and Spain are well represented in Washington museums. Consequently, there are comprehensive descriptions of museum holdings and an accompanying index of artists. Like its predecessor volumes, most recently L. Pitschmann's Scholar's Guide to Northwest European Studies (CH, May'85), this is also an overall guide to resources, covering more than 500 libraries, archives, museums, embassies, professional associations, and governmental agencies. Addresses, telephone numbers, and names of the chief administrators are given. Data gathering began in 1983 with all information checked for accuracy and updated in 1988. Main geographical scope is indicated by the subtitle, but resources relating to Andorra, San Marino, and Monaco are also included. An oral histories and personal papers index, a subject index, an index of organizations and institutions, and the library subject strength index provide access to the extensive descriptions. Appendixes contain such useful local information as lists of federal holidays and of economical accommodations for research visits plus a description of the public transportation system. Most materials included are of interest to scholars in the social sciences and the humanities. Large university and art libraries. M. Stark Syracuse University
