Summary:Good literature is at the core of language arts instruction. Without thought provoking works, students can't begin to make meaning. But finding and using the right texts is tricky. Books need to be rich in ideas and language, yet still appeal to kids. They need to be accessible to readers without frustrating some and boring others. Books need to be appropriate for kids, yet still feel relevant to them. And texts must expand students' horizons without alienating them. Over the next hour, we will explore ways to find, select, and work with the kind of literature that makes a classroom come alive.
