Summary:Lists are found in the earliest surviving texts from ancient Egypt: indices of the names of kings or cities, of houses and their inhabitants, of temples and their offerings. This volume sheds new light on long-forgotten lists, which last received systematic study from archaeologists in the 19th century. In this volume, cultural historians and archaeologists examine the surviving texts, construct models for their use in practice, and demonstrate that lists were significant for social construction, the organization of complex processes such as the building of a pyramid or the management of a state, as well as for literature and for the formation of the arts.
