"The transcription for this present edition is based on examination of both the original document and a microfilm of the Devonshire Manuscript provided by the British Library. Members of the Devonshire MS Editorial Group prepared and transcribed (in a blind process) two paper copies from the microfilm. The transcribers collated the two paper copies manually as collation proved unfeasible by electronic means. The resultant rough transcription was resolved as far as possible using expanded paper prints and enlarged images. Remaining areas of uncertainty were resolved with manual reference to the original document itself, housed at the British Library. This final, collated transcription forms the basis for the current edition"--Page 4.
