Excessive veneration for the past cuts off all hope for the future. Though we have many works on education, it must not be understood that we have many on self-education. The subject has not been entirely overlooked, but it has seldom received the attention which it deserves. The schools have enjoyed a monopoly of public solicitude, and private education has laid neglected as a thing of no importance.
