Summary: | State representative and state senator the Honorable Ethel Skyles Alexander was born on January 16, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois, where she attended Sherwood Elementary School and Englewood High School. Upon graduation, Alexander was employed as a Cook County Circuit Court records clerk for over three decades and was the first woman to be appointed assistant chief deputy clerk of the court's criminal division. Alexander then returned to school, receiving a bachelor's degree from Loop College and completing an IBM Executive Training Course. In 1978, Alexander was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives. In 1986, Alexander was appointed to replace the late Charles Chew in the State Senate, where she remained until she retired in 1993. She served as vice chair of the Elections and Reapportionment Committee and sponsored a bill to prohibit state trade with apartheid-era South Africa. Alexander passed away on September 10, 2016 at the age of ninety-one.
