Summary:Medical director and physician Dr. Gloria Jackson Bacon was born on September 21, 1937 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She earned a B.S. from Xavier University in New Orleans in 1958. She moved to Chicago and graduated from the University of Illinois School of Medicine in 1962. In 1968, her employment at Altgeld Gardens' Murray Homes, a medical facility on Chicago's South Side, was terminated because she spoke out regarding the need to improve care provided to the facility's patients. In response, Bacon opened Clinic in Altgeld, Inc., a not-for-profit agency offering total healthcare and serving as the primary medical resource for the Altgeld Gardens area. Until 1991, Bacon personally funded the center, which greatly improved the health of Altgeld Gardens community residents. She served as director until 2001. In 1992, Bacon returned to her other passion, singing, and appeared at the Chicago Orchestra Hall, ETA Theater and numerous churches.
