Summary: | Dancer and choreographer Robert Battle was born on August 28, 1972 in Jacksonville, Florida. He graduated from the New World School of Arts in Miami, Florida and attended college at The Julliard School in New York City, where he graduated in 1994. Battle joined Parsons Dance Company and performed with them for the next seven years. He also began choreographing professionally for the first time with Parsons. Battle went on to choreograph Mood Indigo, his first piece for the Ailey II dance company, in 1999. In 2001, Battle left Parsons and founded Battleworks Dance Company. During his time there, Battle developed a close relationship with the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, serving as a choreographer for Ailey II and teaching at The Ailey School. In 2010, HistoryMaker Judith Jamison, artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, announced that Battle would succeed her as the company's artistic director in 2011.
