| Summary: | Education consultant and education professor Sherman Beverly, Jr., was born on August 3, 1927 in Port Arthur, Texas. Beverly earned a Ph.D. in social studies education from Northwestern University in addition his M.A. and B.A. degrees. After teaching for two years in Texas, Beverly relocated to Chicago, where he worked for eleven years with the Chicago Board of Education from 1957 to 1969. Beverly went to Kendall College in 1969 to teach African American studies, and in 1973 he obtained a position at Northeastern Illinois University as a professor of inner-city studies. He remained there until his retirement in 1992. He then became an educational consultant with his own firm. Beverly served on the board the Caxton Club. He also directed the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity Men of the Future program, founded the Bluestem Festival of Arts and Humanities and served on the board of the Society for Values in Higher Education.
